1957-1961 The Yellow Years
1957 ushered in a new era for Monopoly. Gone were the multiple editions. There was only one set available, a yellow boxed #9 with beautiful train graphics on it. This box was enlarged slightly later in the year and renumbered to #12. This box lasted only one year and was replaced in 1958 with a yellow box (still the larger size but renumbered again back to #9) that revived the old white box graphics, but with a picture of the board added to the left side of the box. This box had 4 versions over its 4 year life. There were 2 different box variations; one with "copyright 1935, 1946" on the picture of the board and one without. Two different component sets also existed; one with a black bound board and wooden tokens, and one with a green bound board and metal tokens. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to how these sets were put together. Speculation has it that the wooden token set was an effort to continue the base set. This was in the days before shrink wrap so the box top and board could be removed to view the cellophane covered components (I just received a 1961 set with the green board and wooden tokens. This is probably due to the board being switched with another set - maybe before the game was purchased). During this time a new deluxe edition was introduced — a wooden boxed set that remained in production until the early ‘70s.
